Do you have a child who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) or needs some extra support communicating? Your family is welcome to join us for our Practice Trick or Treat!
We use a Trunk or Treat format, with decorated cars and enthusiastic volunteers. Our trunk hosts are speech-language pathologists, other therapists, tutors, and local business owners trained in supporting communication.
We use a variety of "treats", including many non-food items and some snacks/candy. (Please note that peanut items may be present.) We encourage parents to check their child's treats to see which ones are safe.
This year's event will take place at Extraordinary Ventures (200 S Elliott Rd, Chapel Hill), a local non-profit that provides employment opportunities for autistic adults, adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and other neurodiverse adults.
To ensure we have enough treats for everyone, please RSVP on our Contact Us page or email info@littleseedsspeechtherapy.com We are also happy to answer any questions you have regarding your family's unique needs.
Additional details about this year's event:
We will be outdoors on a gravel parking lot, so please wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes.
We will have access to a bathroom during the event.
All participants (including caregivers!) are encouraged to wear costumes, but it is not a requirement. Comfort, safety, and fun are our priorities :)
Siblings, close friends, and chosen family are welcome to attend. Please include them in your RSVP if possible.
Please bring your communication devices fully charged since we will not have outlets. We will have some picture communication options available for participants to use.
Caregivers know what is best for their family members and will be responsible for their participants' safety and actions. Please have at least one caregiver (18 or older) monitor your participant(s) at all times.
Because this event is staffed by a variety of volunteers who are also donating toys/treats/candy, there will likely be peanuts on site and possibly being eaten. We will try to have peanut-free events in the future.
All forms of communication are appreciated and will be honored. Please encourage your participant to communicate in whatever way is most comfortable for them.
If any families, friends, or businesses would like to donate treats, decorate their cars, and/or hand out treats, we would love the extra support! (and so will the Trick or Treaters!)
We can't wait to see you again this year!
*If you love the inclusive ghosts from our flyer as much as we do, please consider purchasing them from Your SLP Bestie :)
